Andrew Haswell Green
b. Worcester, Mass. 1820, d. New York City 1903.
Known as "The Father of Greater New York", Green worked for 5 decades (1843-1898) towards the betterment of the City of New York and its citizens. His achievements in bringing together the 5 boroughs which now comprise New York City was one of his many improvements. Mr. Green can be credited with his vision of a city for such an enormous and diverse population (The "world's second City", behind London in 1898) began unfolding during his lifetime. In 1869 he headed the Central Park Commission and helped to create a cultural center which under Mr. Green included the creation of The American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Bronx Zoo.
As City Comptroller, Mr. Green's intelligence and persistance guided the financial hand of the city away from the the corrupt "Boss" Thomas Tweed Ring which had nearly bankrupted the city before being exposed in 1871. Early this year the City of New York decided to acknowledge Andrew H. Green and his achievements by dedicating 1 1/2 acres of land and 4 1/2 million dollars to build a park in his memory.
